George Nakashima Two-Part Table Group, 1950s
Rare two-part table group designed by George Nakashima for Widdicomb, constructed from solid Indian laurel with hickory spindles. The nesting or companion tables feature Nakashima's characteristic integration of natural wood forms with refined joinery, combining Indian laurel for the tops and legs with contrasting hickory spindles that create an open, rhythmic structure beneath the surfaces. Possibly early prototypes given their unmarked status and construction details.
Both tables have been properly cleaned and freshly treated with tung oil, nourishing the wood and bringing out the natural grain patterns and color variations in the Indian laurel. The oil finish enhances the wood's warmth while providing protection. Hickory spindles display their distinctive grain and lighter tone against the laurel, creating visual contrast within the structural framework. unmarked, which is unusual for Widdicomb production pieces and suggests these may be prototype or early examples predating standard marking practices.
